Under Mi Dub Teng feat. Makiesse Dub Club

by Prince Wadada

/

about

"Under Mi Dub Teng" is an adaptation of one of the most iconic instrumentals in Reggae history, the famous "Under Me Sleng Teng." The origin of this Riddim sparks curiosity, with some theories pointing to songs like Eddie Cochran's "Something Else" or David Bowie's "Hang On To Yourself." However, the first version was released in 1985 by the legendary Jamaican producer King Jammy, featuring the vocals of Wayne Smith and marking the beginning of the digital era in Reggae known as Dancehall.
The story becomes even more intriguing when we learn that Noel Davey, a friend of Wayne Smith, used a preset drum from a Casio synthesizer to create the music. This raises doubts about the true authorship of the work, apparently conceived by Hiroko Okuda, a former Casio employee and graduate of a music college in Tokyo. After being played on Jamaican soundsystems, the Riddim became highly sought after by many artists of the time, including Tenor Saw, Super Cat, Ninjaman, Yellow Man, Shabba Ranks, and more, solidifying its position as one of the most revisited Riddims in the history of Reggae
